Dermatologists

Dermatologists are mostly known as skin doctors, however, they also treat nail, hair, and mucous membrane disorders. Besides treating disorders, dermatologists can assist with cosmetic issues of skin, nails, and hair by helping to improve their appearance. The most common conditions treated by dermatologists include acne, psoriasis, warts, and skin cancer.

When to see a Dermatologist

In some cases you will be referred to see a dermatologist by your GP, however, most of the time you can see a dermatologist without a referral. It’s time to see a dermatologist if you are experiencing any persisting skin, hair, or nail condition, want to undergo skin cancer screening, or seek cosmetic skin procedures or laser hair removal. Remember to always consult with your GP if you’re unsure or experiencing any issues. If you notice any of these symptoms on your skin or nails, you should consider seeing a dermatologist:

  • Skin colour changes
  • Swelling and/or itching
  • Hair loss
  • Ingrowing nails
  • Flaking skin and/or foul smell
  • Suspicious moles
  • Bumps or other unusual formations
